Martin was first elected as a Liberal Democrat Councillor in 2003 for the Chapel and Gadie ward, and in 2007 and 2012 for the Inverurie and District ward of Aberdeenshire Council. He has been Deputy Leader of the Council since May 2012.
Martin has a wide range of responsibilities on Aberdeenshire Council including: Vice-Chair of the Policy and Resources Committee, Vice-Chair of the Community Planning Board and Chair of the North East Scotland Fisheries Development Partnership. He also represents the Council on KIMO, the East of Scotland European Consortium and the North Sea Commission where he is Vice-Chair of the Marine Resources Group and Scottish Member on the Executive Committee.
Prior to becoming a councillor Martin worked in both the public and private sectors predominantly in finance and economic development.
