Gordon Matheson joined Glasgow City Council in May 1999, as the elected Councillor representing Merchant City ward, and was elected Leader of Glasgow Council on 10 May 2010. In the May 2012 local government elections he led the Scottish Labour Party to victory, securing an overall majority in Glasgow.
As Leader, Gordon Matheson has established the Commonwealth Jobs and Graduate Funds; committed Glasgow to bid for the 2018 Youth Olympics; launched a major revamp of George Square; approved a scheme to reduce Glasgow’s landfill by 90%; introduced winter fuel payments to pensioners; and embarked on the refurbishment or rebuild of every school in the city.
Councillor Matheson is a graduate of both Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities, is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Councillor Matheson states that he copes with his busy schedule by taking his full complement of annual leave and holidaying in the sun whenever possible, especially in Italy. He has successfully completed both the Great Scottish Run and the New York Marathon.
